Glossary Of Terms

Bunk Bed
A bunk bed is a type of bed that stacks two bed frames on top of one another, allowing for two to sleep in a room without taking up more floor space.
Platform Bed
A platform bed is a type of bed that typically sits low to the ground with a slat system to support the mattress instead of a boxspring.
Loft Bed
A loft bed is a type of bunk bed with no lower bunk, creating an open space below for a desk, chair, or extra storage space.
Day Bed
A day bed is a bed designed for sitting as well as sleeping - a combination of a sofa and a bed. Daybeds are typically on the smaller side in terms of size, with dimensions corresponding to Twin size beds.
Trundle Bed
Trundle beds are usually considered a pair of beds, one slightly smaller than the twin bed that is on rollers or casters so that it may be put beneath the upper twin bed for storage. Trundle beds allow for two separate beds to be available when necessary, but do not require the space constantly. It is a space-saving idea. The lower bed on some trundle beds can "pop-up" to be the same height as the bed they are stored beneath, creating a larger bed that may be used for guests. Often used as daybeds, trundle beds are less common than bunkbeds for children. Due to storing one bed beneath the other, neither bed usually has a box-spring. When not used for sleeping, the lower bed, with mattress removed, can be used as a general storage drawer.
Canopy Bed
A canopy bed is a decorative bed somewhat similar to a four poster bed. A typical canopy bed usually features posts at each of the four corners extending four feet high or more above the mattress. Ornate or decorative fabric is often draped across the upper space between the posts and a solid swath of cloth may create a ceiling, or canopy directly over the bed.
Platform Bed
A platform bed is a type of bed that typically sits low to the ground with a slat system to support the mattress instead of a boxspring.
Poster Bed
A poster bed is a type of bed featuring tall posts at the corners of the headboard and footboard. Often the posts are connected by a canopy, allowing you to create an enclosed sleeping space.
Four Poster Bed
A four poster bed is a type of bed featuring tall posts at the corners of the headboard and footboard. Often the posts are connected by a canopy, allowing you to create an enclosed sleeping space.
Captains Bed
A captains bed is a type of bed that features underbed storage drawers, allowing you to economize space.
Storage Bed
A storage bed is a type of bed that features storage space under the bed, allowing you to economize space in your bedroom.
Sleigh Bed
A sleigh bed is a style of bed with curved or scrolled foot and headboards, thus resembling a sled or sleigh. Today's sleigh beds are made from a variety of materials including wood, iron, steel and aluminum, and often possess less exaggerated curves of the foot and headboards.
